This Oni-glazed tea caddy/ "chaire" measures 3.75 inches tall.
Traditionally, the tea caddy held the tea for the tea ceremony. History has it that Shogun, or other important Japanese leaders who were afraid of being poisoned, would line the lid of a chaire with gold leaf: if the gold leaf discolored, it was an indication of the tea being poisoned.
Tipping my hat to that historical reality, I've decided to use gold luster on the lids of this series of Chaire....and/or coat the inside of the lid with gold gouasche. The result is my first time making "chaire". Enjoy.
This Oni-glazed approach is my way of continuing to try to expand my visual literacy…to expand my understanding of beauty, and to keep trying to learn how to make the pots that I don’t yet know how to make.
