This Oni-glazed wall vase measures 4.5 inches tall.   Just in time for your Spring flowers.

Wall Vases (Kake Hanaire) are common to traditional Japanese houses.  With little furniture to set pots on, the wall vase is hung on a nail and attached to the uprights in post-and-beam constructed houses.  Also they are common on the framing around windows:  what’s blooming outside is brought inside to the wall vases in order to bring the outside, in.

Typically the wall vase is understated so that it doesn’t upstage the flowers —  old Mr. Matsuyama Suketoshi “schooled” me on this:  “Always remember, the vase is for the flowers….the flowers are not there for the vases.”

I’ve discovered that these bright Oni-Glazed vases are “just right” for wall vases….but alas, I hear dear old Matsuyama sensei turning uneasily in his grave……sorry dear friend.

Be sure to look at all of the detail images as well.  Some of the magic is most visible in the microcosm.

I'm especially interested in "unlearning" some of the things I learned early in my clay career:  I'm now trying to cause/create dripping, running and crawling.  Notice how these "errors" contribute to the vibrant and robust nature of the work.

This approach is my way of continuing to try to expand my visual literacy…to expand my understanding of beauty, and to keep trying to learn how to make the pots that I don’t yet know how to make.

I hope you’ll join me in this adventure…that you might have a place in your cupboard or  collection....that they'd help fill your gifting or daily use rituals ....Enjoy.
